The immune system consists of many different types of cells and secreted proteins which co-ordinate to remove “foreign” substances and infectious agents that invade the body. Interferon alpha (IFN) is an endogenous protein involved in the immune response; it helps to destroy infectious agents in the body. Recombinant human interferon alpha (rhIFN) exerts both anti-viral and anti-cancer effects, and may be used to treat hepatitis and leukemia.
